Is Your Consumer Unit in the Right Place?

Is Your Fuse Box In The Right Place?

Your consumer unit (also known as a fuse box) is the heart of your electrical system, but is it located in the most practical and accessible place in your home or business? This month, we successfully relocated a consumer unit at Newlands of Stow Care Home. Previously tucked away at the bottom of an under-stairs cupboard, the unit was difficult to reach, especially in emergencies or during routine maintenance.

By moving it to a more accessible location near the cupboard doorway, we improved both the convenience and safety for the care home staff. An easily accessible consumer unit means quicker access to reset circuits and perform essential safety checks - crucial in case of electrical faults or power cuts.

Why consider relocating your consumer unit?

  • Safety: A consumer unit hidden in a difficult-to-reach area can delay responses in emergencies.

  • Convenience: Whether it’s for routine maintenance or resetting circuits, having your consumer unit in a more accessible location makes life easier.

  • Compliance: If your unit isn’t easily accessible, it may not comply with current safety regulations, especially in commercial settings where accessibility is essential.

Where Should a Fuse Box Be Located?

When deciding on the ideal location for a consumer unit, keep the following considerations in mind:

  1. Accessibility: The unit should be positioned at a height and location that’s easy to reach without obstacles, such as furniture or storage.

  2. Visibility: Choose a location where the unit is easily visible and identifiable. Avoid hiding it in overly concealed areas that may confuse new occupants or maintenance teams.

  3. Proximity to Entry Points: In homes or businesses, placing the fuse box near the main entrance can make it quicker to locate during power failures. This is particularly beneficial in emergencies.

  4. Avoiding Moisture and Heat: To ensure longevity and safety, the unit should be in a dry, temperature-stable area, away from kitchens, bathrooms, or other high-moisture or high-heat zones.

  5. Clearance Space: There should be enough space around the unit for maintenance and inspection. Avoid tight spaces that hinder access.

Time for a Change?

If your consumer unit is in a less-than-ideal location, relocating it can improve safety, convenience, and compliance. Whether you're managing a business, running a care facility, or ensuring your home’s safety, proper placement of your consumer unit is key.
