Fuseboard Safety: A Shocking Holiday Find!

Mark Emery • 16 September 2024

A crucial reminder of why stringent regulations & regular inspections are so important

During a recent holiday, we encountered a stark reminder of the importance of proper electrical safety standards—something we often take for granted here in the UK. While exploring a local shop, we spotted a fuseboard that was fully exposed and accessible to both staff and the public, with numerous safety issues that would never pass UK regulations.

Here’s what we found:

  • Exposed Live Parts: Accessible live parts could easily cause electric shocks or burns, posing a serious danger to anyone nearby.
  • Exposed Single Insulated Cables: These were dangerously positioned at the bottom of the board, leaving them unprotected.
  • Lack of Circuit Identification: With little to no circuit identification, safely managing the electrical system would be nearly impossible.
  • Missing Warning Labels: There were no warning labels to highlight the risks present, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
  • No Evidence of Inspection: It was clear that this installation had never been inspected or tested for safety.

This shocking discovery serves as a crucial reminder of why stringent regulations and regular inspections are so important. In the UK, we’re fortunate to have world-leading electrical regulations and governing bodies that ensure high standards of workmanship, protecting both lives and property.

If you have any concerns about the safety of your own electrical systems, or if you’re overdue for an inspection, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Electrical safety should never be compromised!
